There are many different types of Pagans. While the Judeo/Christian/Islamic family of belief systems tend to view anyone outside their own belief system as Pagan, that is not true for others. Pagans do not consider people who follow other major religions such as Hinduism or Bhuddism to be Pagan simply because they are not from the J/C/I family.
Paganism is a group of Earth-centered belief systems. There are many Pagan religions and belief systems. The following are some of those religions and belief systems:
For an example though, Wicca has many different branches, just like Christianity does. Christians may be Methodist, Baptist or Lutheran, to name a few. Simalarly, Wiccans may be Alexandrian, Gardnerian or Dianic. These are just a few examples of each, but I think they are sufficient to explain the idea. Please do not feel slighted if your particular faith was not listed. I only have 100 megabytes of space here!
Pagans tend to abhor violence, although there are lots of Pagans in the military, at least in the United States. These Pagans see military service as defending their country, the same as non-Pagans do. They do not wish to be forced to resort to violence and will only do so as a defensive measure. Many Pagans are also consciencious objectors. These are personal decisions and are not dictated by their faith.
If you come into contact with someone who offers you easy magickal knowledge for a fee or tries to convince you to join their coven or a similar organization, you are dealing with a fraud who is only trying to seperate you from your money. Pagans see knowledge as a gift to be shared, not as a commodity to be sold. Teachers may accept donations for the upkeep of the meeting place or ask a fee for the materials needed for a particular class but do not ask for money for profit.
Wicca
Asatru
The Craft, known outside of Paganism as witchcraft
Shamanism (although not all Shamans consider themselves to be Pagan)
Druidry
Strega
The Old Religion (Not all Pagans follow any tradition of the Craft or Druidry.)
There are also many different traditions within the belief systems mentioned above. They are far too numerous to list.
Basically, Pagan faiths are based upon belief systems with roots stretching into antiquity. Sadly, many of the old histories have been lost, so it is impossible to know all of the old ways. However, artifacts are continually being discovered which help to increase the knowledge that we do have.
While I cannot explain everything about all of the Pagan faiths and beliefs here, I can assure the reader that true Pagans do not seek to convert anyone else to their faith. Pagans may instruct dedicated seekers who come to them, but you'll never see one of us preaching on a street corner.
